Abstract

492,435. Universal joints. JULIEN, M. F. A. June 21, 1937, No. 6023 /38. Convention date, June 20, 1936. Divided application. [Class 80 (ii)] Axially - separated shaft-flanges 3, 4 are universally connected by an axially extending annular mass of rubber or like non- metallic elastic material, composed of a number of separate elements 5, adhering to plates 6, bolted to the shaft-flanges so as to permit individual removal of the elements. The rubber elements 5 may be circumferentially spaced or have concave abutting faces, and may be of circular, oval, square, polygonal or, as shown in Fig. 2, segmental form. The securing bolts 12 are embedded in the rubber and have keys 15 preventing them from turning in the plates 6. They engage open-ended radial slots 13 in the shaft-flanges to permit radial removal, and carry washers 17 fitting milled recesses in the flanges to prevent outward radial movement under centrifugal force. The axial width of the elements is preferably greater than their radial thickness, and their inner diameter is preferably greater than half their outer diameter. The radial thickness in the median zone is reduced, as shown, to result in uniform stressing under centrifugal, torque and lateral load. The rubber elements may be perforated or laminated. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the rubber annulus may be in one piece. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
