Abstract
520,513. Flywheels. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and HASSLER, H. H. Nov. 3, 1938, Nos. 31875/38 and 3955/39. [Class 122 (i)] A built-up flywheel comprises a boss and web portion 1, a separate. rim portion 2 retained thereon, and substantially rigid transmitting members 3 which, while constraining the rim to rotate substantially rigidly with the web portion, permit such free radial movement between the rim and web that on circumferential expansion of the rim under centrifugal force no appreciable stress is transmitted to the web. In Fig. 1, recesses 1a, 2a receive radial keys 3 plain or tapered, which connect separate rim parts 2 to a built-up web part 1, and bolts and nuts 4 which permit of radial movement of the rims, may bind the parts 1, 2 in an axial direction. As shown in Fig. 3 a rim 2 has an inner reduced part of the same thickness as the web 1 on which it fits. Slots 1a, 2a in the parts 1, 2 receive radial keys 3 which are secured by bolts 4, large washers 7, which prevent axial movement. In a further modification, Fig. 4, the web 1 is formed of two discs 1 spaced apart by welded spaces 5 and connected to discs 6 forming bosses. The rim 2 has two inwardly projecting members 2c which fit between the discs, and keys 3 engage notches 1a, 2a in the parts 1, 2, the keys being fitted with washers 7 to prevent axial movement. In other modifications keys engage external or internal radial notches in the rims and web, and the keys may be welded to the rims to prevent axial movement and engage slots in the webs in such a manner that radial movement is permitted.
