Abstract

491,149. Hydraulic transmission brakes. HYDRAULIC BRAKE CO. Feb. 26, 1937, No. 5836. Convention date, Feb. 27, 1936. [Class 103 (i)] In a hydraulic brake for vehicles in which a master cylinder applies a brake on one wheel by hydraulic transmission, the torque of which applies the brakes on the other wheels by a second hydraulic transmission, these transmissions are connected to a reservoir from which they are disconnected on brake operation. The master cylinder 18, Fig. 4, is adapted to operate a brake cylinder 52, Fig. 2, which applies shoes 70, 72 which transmit a torque through either thrust pin 78, 80 to a cylinder 54 connected by piping to brake cylinders on the other vehicle wheels so as to apply the brakes on these wheels. This piping is connected to the reservoir 10, Fig. 4, by a passage 30 and a spring-pressed valve 34 which is released to close this connection on the initial movement of the brake pedal 134 which also moves the piston 108 to close the port 20 connecting the master cylinder to the reservoir. The master cylinder is replenished by fluid drawn from the reservoir through port 22 and past piston 108 by suction created on release movement of the piston. Excess fluid is returned through the port 20. The cylinders 52, 54 are connected by a normally closed bleed valve 58.
