Abstract

374,150. Hydraulic brakes. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd., Titanic Works, Lincoln, and PAYNE, M., 50, Hook Road, Surbiton, Surrey. March 6, 1931, No. 7089. [Class 103 (i).] In an hydraulic braking system for motor vehicles in which the pistons or plungers of the brake cylinders are fitted with cup-washers, a piston 1, diaphragm, or bellows is interposed in the hydraulic transmission conduit 4, 5 between the master cylinder and the brake cylinders, and is acted on by a spring 6 so that on release of the brake a residual hydraulic pressure is maintained in the brake cylinders which keeps the cup-washers expanded. In order that the fluid displacement for a full application of the brake may if necessary exceed the volume swept out by the maximum movement of the piston 1, the piston is fitted with a non-return valve 7. On release of the brake an abutment 8 opens the valve and when the pressure in the brake cylinders reaches a predetermined minimum value the spring 6 moves the piston 1 forward to permit the valve to close. The valve may be disposed in a byepass communicating with both sides of the piston.
