Convention date, May 28, 1936 [Class 74 (ii)] A cylinder-and-dial rib machine is provided with transfer instruments 11 in either the dial bed or the cylinder or in both. Each instrument comprises a pair of spaced members between which, e.g. the dial needle 4 can slide, and to facilitate entrance of a cylinder needle 3 therebetween for transfer of the loop, one member is cut away as at 24 to allow lateral movement of the cylinder needle. The two members may be formed integrally, the transfer instrument being of U-shape, each member having a butt 19 projecting therefrom which is filled in by a rectangular piece welded or soldered to the butts. As shown in Fig. 2, the dial rotates about an axis eccentric to the axis of the cylinder, so that in transferring loops from the dial needles to the cylinder needles, the cylinder needles first lag behind the dial needles, the cut-away portion 24 preventing damage to the raised cylinder needles, and subsequently the cylinder needles gain with respect to the dial needles so that at the point of transfer the raised cylinder needles engage, or nearly so, the uncut member to facilitate the transfer of the loop. Alternatively, the dial may be concentric with the cylinder, and a ratchet mechanism may be employed for shogging the dial with respect to the cylinder. The dial cams 8, 9 for knitting rib fabric, and the cams 13, 14 controlling the dial needles during transfer operations are adjustable vertically under pattern control.
