Abstract
488,408. Sharpening lawn - mowers. CAMBRIDGE, A. S. Dec. 14, 1937, No. 34549. [Class 60] [Also in Groups, I and XXIV] A lawn-mower having a rotary cutter engaging a fixed horizontal cutter blade is provided with means for locking the rotary cutter shaft to the gear wheel mounted on it so that it can be driven backwards for sharpening the cutter against the fixed blade. Figs. 1 and 2 show the shaft 1 of the rotary cutter carrying the wheel 2 which normally drives the shaft 1 in the forward direction only. In order to lock the shaft 1 to the wheel 2 when the latter rotates in the reverse direction, a pin 6 having an eccentric head 5 is mounted in the end of the shaft 1. The shaft and wheel are locked together by rotating the pin to bring the head into contact with the inner surface of the wheel 2. The inner surface of the wheel 2 and the head of the pin may be provided with teeth to produce a positive lock between the two parts, or the inner surface of the wheel may be provided with recesses to receive the head of the pin. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which one of a number of projections 10 on the inner surface of the wheel 2 abuts against the head of the pin when this has been turned to abut against the wheel 2. Fig. 6 shows a further modification in which the pin is provided with a projection 11 which rides over the top surface of the wheel 2 and is engaged by one of a number of projections 12 standing up from the wheel.
