[Class 83 (iii)] [See also Group XXVI] A rotary engine, pump, or meter of the Roots' blower type comprises a piston b having plane edges h which roll on the periphery of a second piston c shaped as shown, the pistons being geared together. The ends of the piston b are curved and may roll on curved portions n of the second piston. In a modification, the portions n are dispensed with, and a clearance is provided between the pistons. The bevelled parts k of the piston b may be shaped as an ordinary tooth of a toothed wheel. Fig. 5 shows a method of machining the piston c. A milling cutter o rotates on its axis q, and the piston rotates around its axis d, and is also moved around the circle r. by means of a toothed wheel s, fixed on the spindle of the piston, meshing with a stationary toothed wheel t of the same size. A grinding disc, or a reciprocating plane, may replace the cutter. The cutting tool may roll around the piston, which would then remain stationary.
