Abstract

487,339. Repeaters. SOC. D'APPLICATIONS TELEPHONIQUES. Dec. 18, 1936, No. 34863. Convention date, Jan. 16. [Class 40 (iv)] In a repeater with means for relaying ringing- current, the incoming ringing-current which is of substantially greater amplitude than speech currents is applied directly or through a rectifier to a valve in the speech path, and the change in anode current operates a direct-current relay to connect up a new source. As shown in Fig. 1, the speechamplifying valve 3 is worked on the lower bend of its characteristic and the reception of ringing-current operates relay 5 to connect up the new source. To prevent excess voltages of ringing-current from damaging the valve, a rectifier network is included in the input circuit and is biassed by a resistance 9 in the anode circuit so that the resistance of the network increases with applied voltage. Other arrangements of rectifier networks having a separate biassing battery are described. Fig. 5 shows an arrangement in which the ringing- current is filtered at 14, rectified at 15, and applied to the grid of valve 3 to reduce the bias so that normally-operated relay 5 releases. Fig. 7 shows a complete two-way repeater. Relays 5, 5<1> are differential and are balanced by the normal anode currents in valves 3<1>, 3, respectively, so that relays 19, 19<1> are normally operated. Ringing-current over line L unbalances relay 5<1>, releasing relay 19<1> which operates relay 24 to connect the new source 26 to line L<1>. Relay 27 in series with relays 5, 5<1> is normally unoperated, but if oscillations occur in the repeater due to unbalance, relay 27 operates opening the biassing circuits of relays 5, 5<1> so that both operate. Relays 19, 19<1> both release so that the repeater is completely byepassed over leads 22, and an alarm circuit 28 is closed. The same result occurs if the supply voltage fails. A similar two-way repeater is also described, Fig. 8 (not shown), in which rectified ringing- currents control grid-bias as in Fig. 5.
