Abstract

An aluminium alloy contains 2,5-3,2 per cent of copper, 0,7-1,1 per cent of magnesium, 0,03-0,15 per cent of titanium, up to 0,25 per cent of silicon, and up to 0,45 per cent of iron, with or without up to 0,25 per cent of silver, and up to a total of 0,2 per cent of chromium, cerium, lithium, nickel, molybdenum, and manganese. In making the alloy, magnesium may be added as metal and titanium as a copper-titanium-aluminium alloy, and the alloy may be fluxed with the flux described in Specification 435,279. Heat-treatment may comprise maintaining the alloy at 525-575 DEG C. for not more than 15 minutes, quenching, and mechanically working. This may be followed by ageing or precipitation hardening, for example soaking for over 100 hours at 170 DEG C. or 2 hours at 220 DEG C., or hardening for 1-4 hours at 200-240 DEG C. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 162,467, [Class 82 (i)].
