Abstract

484,928. Gear - cutting. BROWN, & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D., and SYKES, A. Nov. 18, 1936, No. 31530. [Class 83 (iii)] The work-table of a gear-hobbing machine is driven by means of double-reduction gearing including spur or helical gearing a, b and worm gearing e, d, the gearing being carried in a cradle g which is moved tangentially or concentrically of the blank in unison with the hob carriage movement to distribute the errors in the table drive. The gear b is fast on a shaft c and the worm gearing is driven from a power shaft f through a slidable coupling. The cradle is moved along guides h by means of a screw j running in a nut i and connected to the hob carriage. The nut i is connected to an arm moving on a cam track m, the nut being thus rotated to compensate for the lack of uniformity of the table rotation due to the tangential movement of the cradle. The additional table rotation caused by the cradle travel is also compensated by corresponding differential movement of the hob. When the drive gearing is moved concentrically of the work table instead of tangentially the compensating means m may be dispensed with.
