Abstract

331,343. Brown & Sons (Huddersfield), Ltd., D., and Reid, J. M. May 30, 1929. Gear-cutting.-In a gear-hobhing machine the hob table together with the hob-rotating and feeding mechanism, is adjustable about the horizontal axis of a worm gear from which the rotary and feeding motions are derived. The hollow body casting 10, whose base forms a sump for the cutter lubricant is provided with guides 11 for the work table slide 12 and with a circular seating 13 on which the hob table is adjustable, the setting being indicated by a scale 12<1>. The hob table carries guides 15, 15<1> for a slide 16 which is fitted with supports 18 for the hob spindle 17 carrying the hob 20. A worm shaft 26 coaxial with the arcuate seating 13 is connected to the hob-spindle through worm wheel 24, shaft 23, and spur gears 21. The shaft 26 is also connected to one side 27 of spur wheel differential whose other side is connected through a shaft 30 and change gears 31 to the spindle 32 of an electric motor. The shaft 23 is connected through clutch 34 and change gears 35 to a screw 36 which traverses the hob slide 17 to feed the hob tangentially of the blank. Further change gearing 37 connects the feed screw to a shaft 38 which drives the differential casing to compensate the blank rotation for the hob feed. The clutch 34 may be automatically tripped when the tangential feed is completed and the hob slide may be returned either by hand rotation of the shaft 36 or by power. A shaft 41 driven by change gearing 43 carries a splined wom 42 for driving the work table 19 which is fitted with a stand 19<1> carrying the blank and is mounted on the slide 12. Adjustment of the work table is effected by means of a screwed spindle 44 carrying a hand wheel 46, pinion 48, and a disc. 47 graduated in hundredths and thousandths of an inch. A pinion 49 carried by the disc 47 engages the pinion 48 and also a pinion 50 mounted on a second graduated disc 51 and having one tooth more or less than the pinion 50, so that a complete rotation of the screw moves the second disc through a distance representing two tenths of an inch.
