Abstract

Uranium monocarbide, UC, is prepared by heating a mixture of a uranium oxide, e.g. the dioxide or tritaoctaoxide, and carbon in substantially the stoichiometric proportions to form the monocarbide. In the example 7.5 parts uranium dioxide, finely powdered to pass through a 100 mesh or finer, is mixed with 1 part graphite of the same fineness. The mixture may be compressed to a rod and is heated to 2275-2320 DEG C in a graphite crucible, and the temperature maintained for 20 minutes to form the monocarbide and sinter the particles. Less than the stoichiometric proportion of carbon may be used, and extra uranium oxide may be added, when the reaction of the original mixture is nearly complete. The heating may be carried out in an atmosphere of air or hydrogen. In the example the product is UC 1.27, which is stated to be UC with some carbon dissolved or dispersed therein.
