Abstract
483,730. Binaural transmission; soundreceiving devices. SAVAGE, L. F., and FRANCIS, C. J. July 23, 1936, No. 20419. [Class 40 (iv)] In a system for binaural sound reproduction with or without a gramophone link, the stage &c. is divided into zones each of which is taken care of by a directional microphone unit. Each of these, except those corresponding with the outermost zones, comprises two or more microphones associated respectively with the transmission channels, or a single microphone associated with both channels through individual amplifiers. The microphones or amplifiers are given different effective sensitiveness by means of shunts or of potential divider circuits which may be reactive. The units dealing with the outermost zones may be connected to one channel only. The microphone units may all be assembled in one structure comprising a number of suitably directed horns in which microphones 15, 16, preferably of piezo-electric type, are arranged with sponge-rubber separators 29, 30. The space between the horns is filled with sound insulating material 27. At the receiving end the sound may be reproduced by a pair of loudspeakers, one connected to each channel or by a group of loudspeakers associated with the channels in a similar way to the microphones.
