[Class 135] A flushing - valve for closets and the like is adapted for direct connection to a supply main 8 and comprises a casing 1 divided by a partition 2 into an upper chamber 3, communicating with the flush pipe 6, and a lower piston chamber 4. A piston 5 works in the chamber 4 and has a piston rod 10 carrying a main valve member 9 and a second valve member 11 adapted to seat on the upper and lower sides respectively of an aperture 7 between the main 8 and chamber 3. A control valve 14 actuated by, for example, a treadplate 23 controls the pressure from the main 8 through a conduit 17 to raise the piston 5 and move the valve 11 to seat on the underside of aperture 7. On release of the valve 14 it closes under the water pressure and relief orifices 21 are opened by the valve head 20 to allow the water to leak out of the space below the piston 5, which moves down under the water pressure to open the aperture 7 for the flush, which continues until the main valve member 9 seats on top of the aperture 7. The size of the relief orifices determines the time the piston 5 takes to move from its upper to its lower position and hence the duration of the flush. An air escape passage 13 for the space above piston 5 is provided, and one or more relief orifices may be provided in the wall of the cylinder near the lower end thereof so that the piston will be subjected to a retarding or dashpot action as the main valve member 9 approaches its seat.
