[Class 7 (vi)] [Also in Group XXVI] In a liquid-fuel injection engine having an air throttle automatically opened by a spring against the action of the engine suction, the means for manually controlling the fuel supply is connected to the throttle spring so as to maintain the correct proportion of fuel and air. Fig. 1 shows one form, in which liquid fuel is supplied to injectors by a pump 2 controlled by a rod 14 connected by linkwork 16, 17 to a hand lever 12, which is also con. nected by a rod 13 to a spring 9 tending to open an unbalanced air throttle 5 in the inlet to a turbo-compressor 4. A screw adjustment 18 may be provided at the connection of the link 17 to the lever 12. In a modification, the pump 2 injects liquid fuel past a needle valve into the inlet pipe between the throttle 5 and the compressor, the needle valve being connected to the link 17. Fig. 3 shows a further modification having means for reducing the fuel supply when the density of the air falls below a certain value. The spring 9 is connected to a diaphragm 28 which is also acted on by a spring 33 tending to extend the spring 9. One side of the diaphragm is connected at 34 to the air-inlet pipe before the throttle 5, and the other side by pipes 35, 36 to a Venturi 37 on the other side of the throttle. The two sides of the diaphragm are further connected together by a pipe 31 with a restriction 32, and a valve 38 in the connection 35, 36 is closed by the throttle when this is fully opened due to a decrease in the density of the air. The suction in the Venturi 37 then displaces the diaphragm to the left, thereby diminishing the fuel supply by movement of the lever 12 and the connection 17, either directly or through a servomotor. The compressor may be arranged in front of the throttle, or be omitted altogether. Specification 443,933 is referred to.
