Abstract
471,162. Tractors; driving-gearing. PUGH, Ltd., C. H., and LEITCH, G. A. Feb. 28, 1936, No. 5974. [Classes 79 (i) and 79 (ii)] A tractor with driving gear for the road wheels and a power take-off which can be used independently of each other comprises an engine 10 driving one end of a longitudinal shaft 9, clutch and gear means 8 at an intermediate part of the shaft for driving the road wheels 2 through a transverse shaft 6 and separate, independently controlled clutches 15, and an externally-exposed power take-off shaft 23 driven through a clutch 19 from the tail end of the shaft 9. In the construction shown, the engine drives the shaft 9 through a clutch 11, and the shaft 9 drives the road wheels through worm gear 8, 7, the transverse shaft 6, independent clutches 15, and spur gearing 5, 4. Each clutch 15 is controlled by a separate hand lever 18 on the guiding handle 14 so that either wheel can be de-clutched for steering or both wheels can be de-clutched together. The main clutch 11 is controlled by a hand lever 12, and the power take-off clutch 19 by a lever 27 engaging either of two notches in a member 29 to hold the clutch " in " or " out " as desired. The take-off shaft 23 drives external machines or appliances through a chain wheel 23 or other suitable means.
