Abstract

495,727. Retorts for destructive distillation. WOODALL-DUCKHAM (1920), Ltd., and FINLAYSON, T. C. July 20, 1937, No. 20034. [Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i)] In an installation of continuously operating vertical retorts which includes a group of four retorts 9 arranged end-to-end across the bench with independent coal feeding and coke extractor devices, a gas-collecting space 13, a gas offtake 14 and a heating flue system are provided common to each pair of retorts. Heating flue systems for the pairs of retorts 9a, 9b, Fig. 3, comprise the usual horizontal superposed inter-communicating flues 21 through which the heating gases flow in zigzag manner, combustion gas being supplied to both heating systems through a common inlet pipe 22 and combustion air to independent preheating flues through inlets 23a, 23b. The air and combustion gas are admitted together through damper-controlled ports 24 to the lowest of the heating flues 21 of each system ; secondary air may be admitted through dampercontrolled ports 25. In a modification of the invention, each pair of retorts 9c, 9d, Fig. 6, is provided with a heating system comprising four vertical flues 27 communicating at the top through damper-controlled ports 34 with collecting flues 28. Combustion gas and air are supplied as before to mix at the base of each vertical flue, secondary air inlets 33 being provided. In this modification the heating of each of the retorts may be independently controlled by regulation of the dampers 34. The retorts are preferably of elongated and substantially rectangular crosssection.
