Abstract

815,590. Combustion apparatus; preventing corrosion. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. Oct. 18, 1956 [Aug. 31, 1955], No. 24982/55. Class 51 (1). In order to reduce the deposition of sodium and vanadium compounds on the blades &c. of a gas turbine engine operating on a petroleum residual fuel, a small proportion of finelydivided carbon is introduced into the combustion chamber in such conditions that at least a part of said carbon remains dispensed in the combustion gases passing through the engine. In the method described, at least a part of the engine's air supply is passed through a chamber wherein the carbon is formed by carbonizing a straight-run distillation fraction or residue, and thereafter passing the heated air carrying the carbon in suspension to the combustion chamber of the engine. In engines having a plurality of combustion chambers, the carbon may be introduced into all of them. The carbon may be produced by subjecting an organic liquid feed to coking conditions in an indirect heatexchanger which is heated by combustion gases and it may be fed into the combustion chamber by a screw conveyer, as a suspension in the main or a subsidiary fuel or " fluidized " in the air stream.
