Abstract

469,050. Hydraulic apparatus. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., WRIGHT, J., and TREVASKIS, H. Feb. 19, 1936, No. 5014. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXI and XXXIII] Rapid-firing guns and camera guns in aircraft are operated hydraulically. The pressure circuit passes through a valve 21 in the handle portion of the chief-flying control, which valve is closed normally by a spring to prevent the passage of liquid. A hand-operated pump 1, or a power pump, expels liquid through a pipe 2 positioned upon the handle 4 of the control 5. On operating a push button 20, fluid is supplied through a pipe 6 to the gun. The pump cylinder 9 is housed in a casing or reservoir 1 filled with oil. The piston is operated by the handle 12 raised against the resistance of a spring 13 which maintains the pressure upon release of the handle 12. Used oil returns to the casing 1 by a pipe 8. When the pump is enginedriven, the inlet 2 and return pipe are interconnected through an excess-pressure, relief valve. The valve 21 is pressed in one direction by the cylindrical button 20 to put the port 14, connected by passage 6 to the gun, in communication with the pressure-liquid, supply port 29 or with the return port 8 by a valve groove 27. The sleeve 16 forming a part of the valve casing has a flange 17 which engages a flange 18 on the button 20. The space housing the spring 26 is connected by a passage 30 with the return pipe to facilitate operations. A safety ring 33 is arranged on the sleeve 16. Leaf springs secured to the ring 33 are housed in grooves 34 in both the ring and sleeve 16, and may pass through slots in the inner wall of the sleeve into an annular chamber 35 to hold the button out of action. On rotating the ring, surfaces on the sleeve 16 press the springs outwardly and free the button. Spring means may be interposed between the ring 33 and the sleeve 16 to hold the ring in the safety or the firing position. A spring-loaded piston may be moved by the liquid to operate the boltrelease mechanism or trigger of the guns. Specifications 469,049 and 469,054 are referred to.
