Single-acting suction-valveless piston pumps; drip, preventing; valves, arrangement of. - A lubricant pump comprises a plunger 2, Fig. 1, projecting through a lubricant reservoir 1 under the control of an external spring 3, and sliding in a cylinder 7 secured to the reservoir 1, from which the pump draws its charges. The reaservoir contains a follower piston comprising cup-leathers 24, 25 secured on a core 23, balls 28 being held between a tapered shoulder 27 in the core and the plunger 2 by spring washers 29. On the discharge stroke of the plunger, jamming of the balls causes the follower piston to move forward with the plunger until the resistance becomes too great. Lubricant is discharged return valve comprising a packing member 9 against which a member 10 is pressed by a spring 11, the plunger 2 contacting with the member 10 just before the end of the stroke. During the suction stroke, the return movement of the member 9 produces a slight vacuum in the rigid discharge pipe 12, which is jointed to the cylinder 7 and is provided with a coupling member 14, so as to prevent escape of lubricant. The cylinder 7 is provided with a packing member 6. The reservoir 1 is recharged by a tubular metal container 21, Fig. 2, which is adapted to be screwed on to the reservoir in place, of the cylinder 7 and is collapsed by means of a key 22. In the form shown in Fig. 3, a removable container 8, containing a follower piston 16 slidable on a rod 17 secured to a cover 18 and exposed to atmospheric pressure through a hole in the cover, is screwed on to the side of the chamber 1. Fig. 4 shows a modified form of non-return valve comprising a differential piston 19, the spring 11 acting on the larger face of the piston. On the discharge stroke, the piston 19 is moved against the spring to uncover apertures 20.
