Abstract
467,264. Cleaning ships' hulls. KYRIAKOPOULOS, G. K., and CHRYSSOCHOIDES, A. G. Nov. 9, 1935, No. 31041. Convention date, Nov. 10, 1934. [Class 113 (i)] Ships' hulls are cleaned by a travelling carriage carrying rotating brushes and other devices for operating on the skin plating. The carriage is caused to cling to the plating by the provision of electromagnets actuated from the driving- motor, the solenoids of the magnet, the driving- wheels of the carriage and the ships' plating forming a closed electromagnetic path. According to the invention, the core 2 of the solenoid surrounded by the coils 3 energized from the motor 16, supports one end of the pair of shafts 5 on which the travelling wheels 6 are mounted. The driving-gear includes clutches 21 by operating which the device may be guided in any desired direction. The brush 7 is mounted on a spring-controlled hollow-arm 8 within which the driving-gear is arranged. The transmission mechanism is contained within a water-tight casing 1 and the device may be provided with a tank 33 by means of which the buoyancy may be regulated. The apparatus may be provided with a third driving wheel or two of the carriages may be coupled together in which case the third wheel is removed.
