[Class 130] A continuous tobacco filler, either for making cigarettes or for cutting into sections for insertion into packages, has portions of greater mass at predetermined intervals along its length ; it is formed by feeding a stream of tobacco through a confining passage which determines the cross-sectional area of the filler and removing the tobacco from the opposite end of the passage at a slower speed than that at which tobacco is fed into the passage. As shown in the Figure, tobacco falling from one end of a feed shoot on to a belt 7 is spaced into heaps by a distributing element 9, as described in Specification 460,245 before passing beneath vanes 8 which impart a forward movement to tobacco falling down the remainder of the shoot. The tobacco on the belt 7 is compacted, as described in Specification 440,182, while passing through a confining passage 13 on to a paper web 11 which moves slower than the belt 7. The portions of greater mass are spaced so as to produce cigarettes having denser portions at one or both ends. In modified constructions, spaced heaps of tobacco are deposited on the belt 7 before or after it passes beneath a hopper. Specification 249,575, [Class 130], also is referred to.
