Abstract

464,829. Moving signs. KIRKPATRICK, M. H. Oct. 24, 1935, No. 29320. [Class 3 (i)] An indicating or advertising device comprises a vertical rotatable mast-like structure of very great length in proportion to its diameter and provided with means which permit and control its side sway under wind pressure. The means consist of vertical compression springs 17 located between a fixed base 16 and a floating base 14 on which the mast 10 rests by means of ball bearings 13. In a modification the springs are horizontally disposed between the mast and a dished structure fixed on the base 16. Spring guy ropes 20 may be fixed to a ring 19 at the top of the mast. The indicia 21 may be fixed or detachably mounted on the mast, or may comprise the mast structure itself. The drive may be from a motor 24 through gearing 22, 23, 25 to a shaft stepped in a bearing 11 and connected to the mast by a fixed or flexible coupling 18, or may be from a motor located above the base 16 and driving the mast by a friction wheel. Lamps on or-near the indicia can be switched on to illuminate the device at will. All faces of the mast may carry indicia, and an access ladder may be provided within.
