Abstract
A rotary display stand (2, 3) within a display cabinet (1) has a drive unit with a motor (16) and a gear arrangement (17). The gear arrangement can be detached from a rotary member (2) of the display stand and the drive unit is mounted in a housing (10) which is detachably mounted on the display cabinet (1). <IMAGE>
Description
ROTARY APPARATUS
This invention relates to rotary apparatus, and is particularly concerned with rotary display stands.
With known display cabinets containing rotary display stands such as may be used in shops to display expensive or fragile goods, the rotary stand is customarily driven by a motor and gear box installed within the cabinet.
This arrangement can be disadvantageous in so far as it can be difficult or inconvenient to gain access to motor and gear box for repair purposes.
An object of the present invention is to provide a drive unit for rotary apparatus which is readily accessible for repair purposes.
According to the invention therefore there is provided rotary apparatus comprising a rotary member within a housing and a drive un it comprising a motor and a gear arrangement drivably connecting said motor to said rotary member, said gear arrangement being detachably connected to said drive member, and said drive unit being mounted on a support structure which is detachably mounted on said housing.
With this arrangement, the drive unit can be readily removed for repair or replacement purposes.
In a particularly preferred embodiment the rotary member has a gear exposed at an external surface of the housing, the support structure being mountable on the surface and the gear arrangement of the drive unit being exposed on the support structure and detachably meshable with the gear of the rotary member. In this way, the arrangement may be such that it is only necessary to lift the support structure off the housing surface to detach the drive unit.
To prevent rotation of the support structure of the drive unit, provision may be made for keying the support structure to the housing for example by engagement of a projection on the support structure with a slot on the housing.
The support structure may be of the form of a box or housing with an aperture therein through which the gear arrangement can connect with the rotary member.
It is visualised that the invention will find particular application in the context of a rotary display stand within a display cabinet, although the invention is not intended to be restricted to this application.
The invention will now be described further by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a diagrammatic sectional view of one form of rotary apparatus according to the invention.
As shown in the drawing, a display cabinet comprises a generally rectangular wooden housinglwith glass windows in one or more side walls. Within the housing 1 there is a display stand comprising a rotatable central shaft 2 with attached support platforms 3. The shaft 2 extends vertically and at its top end is attached to a short rod 4 which extends through the top horizontal wall 5 of the housing 1. This rod is mounted in a bearing 6.
The bearing 6 is mounted within a plastics collar 7 which is fixed to the outer surface of the top wall 5. The top end of the rod 4 terminates in a flat flange 8 and a gear wheel 9 is fixed to this.
A drive unit is mounted on the top wall 5 and comprises a drum-shaped housing 10 having a circular side wall 11, a flat top wall 12 and an annular bottom wall 13 having a central aperture 14. The bottom wall 13 is defined by a lid which fits into the wall 11 and is fixed in position by screws (not shown).
Within the housing 10, on the inner surface of the lid 13, there is an upstanding bracket 15 on which is mounted an electric motor 16 with an attached gear box 17. The gear box 17 has a drive output shaft on which is mounted a gear wheel 18. This gear wheel 18 is rotatable about a vertical axis spaced to one side of the centre of the aperture 14 in the lid 13. The gear wheel 18 is positioned so that it projects partially across the aperture 14.
At one side of the aperture 14 a short metal bar 19 is fixed to the lid 13 so as to project radially into the aperture 14.
The motor 16 is connected via a switch 20 to a socket 21 on the top wall 12 of the housing 10.
The housing 10 rests on top of the top wall 5 of the cabinet with the central axis of the housing 10 aligned with the axis of the shaft.
In this position the aperture 14 fits around the gear wheel 9, the bar 19 engages a slot 20 in the side of the plastics collar 7 and the gear wheel 9 meshes with the gear wheel 18.
The shaft 2 and hence the display platforms 3 can now be rotated by switching on the motor 16.
If it is necessary to repair the motor or associated gear box it is only necessary to lift off the housing 10. The gears 9, 18 disengage and the bar 19 slides out of the slot 20 to permit easy removal of the drive unit.
It is of course to be understood that the invention is not intended to be restricted to the details of the above embodiment which are described by way of example only.
Claims (7)
1. A rotary apparatus comprising a rotary member within a housing and a drive unit comprising a motor and a gear arrangement drivably connecting said motor to said rotary member, said gear arrangement being detachably connected to said drive member, and said drive unit being mounted on a support structure which is detachably mounted on said housing.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the rotary member has a gear exposed at an external surface of the housing, the support structure being mountable on the surface and the gear arrangement of the drive unit being exposed on the support structure and detachably meshable with the gear of the rotary member.
3. Apparatus according to claim 1 or 2 wherein provision is made for keying the support structure to the housing.
4. Apparatus according to claim 3 wherein a projection is provided on the support structure for engagement with a slot on the housing.
5. Apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein the support structure is in the form of a box or housing with an aperture therein through which the gear arrangement can connect with the rotary member.
6. Apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 5 which constitutes a rotary display stand within a display cabinet.
7. Apparatus according to claim 1 substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
