Abstract

464,137. Diamond tools. JEARUM, F. C. Oct. 15, 1935, No. 28399. [Class 124] [Also in Group XXII] A tool for boring, turning and like operations comprises a diamond or like hard cutting bit or tip 3 closely fitting in a recess in a tool shank 1 or other fixed holding member and secured by a clamping member 8 which is constrained at three points, viz. an adjustable fulcrum 9, a clamping screw 10 and the bearing on the top 3. In Fig. 3, the recess 2 has a rearwardly sloping bottom surface and rearwardly converging side surfaces and is shaped to fit the cutting tip 3 whose upper surface protrudes slightly beyond the upper surface of the shank. The pin 9 is adjusted while the clamping face is observed by a microscope until the said face contacts snugly with the upper surface of the bit. The clamping pressure also tends to move the bit rearwardly to cause the side walls 4 of the bit to be closely gripped. In a modification applicable to a tool as described in Specification 453,292 a taper headed screw 11, Fig. 4, coacts with the clamping members 14, 15 to determine the aspect of the clamping face 16 when the parts are secured by the wedge ring 12 and shank 13. In a modification of this form the wedge ring is of internally spherical form to facilitate the pivotal action of the clamping members. In an application to a boring tool. Fig. 6, the tip is located between partly spherical clamping members 27, 28 and protrudes through a ring member 25 having a spherical seating 26. The shank 24 has a spherical recess at its end and screws into the ring 25 thus coacting with the seating 26 in securing the clamping members, the aspect of the clamping face being determined by a taper pin 32, which is screwed between the clamping members.
