[Class 34 (ii)] Apparatus for the rapid drying of wooden planks in a drying chamber 1, Fig. 1, at high temperatures (90-125‹ C.) is characterized in that under the drying chamber is located a heating chamber 3 communicating by passages 5 in such a manner that drying air first contacts with the two ends only of the pile 2. The heating chamber contains at least one generator 8 and a partition 4 between the chambers serves as a weighbridge. The walls of both chambers may be made of metal plates with insulating material therebetween. Alternatively, the walls may be made of non- absorbent material with a coating on the inner side of paint. The heat producer 8 which may be a stove can be withdrawn for repairs or cleaning. Smoke and heating pipes 9 are connected thereto. Electrical heat may be used. The stove 8 has a pipe coil 10 leading to an evaporation vessel 12 arranged beneath the passage 5 to moisten the upward current of air. At one side of the chamber 3 are valves 14 to admit fresh air. On the floor 4 are rails 15 for a truck 16 carrying the wood. The truck can be run off a railed table 17. The floor 4 is arranged as the arm of a scale resting on a beam 18 to register as at 20, 21 the loss of moisture. The two ends of the chamber 1 are closed by doors 22 pivoted at 123 and counterweighted at 24 to remain in a given position. The doors 22 are provided with a slotted wall 25 after the manner of a Venetian blind which extends above the slot 5 so as to distribute incoming air. The walls 25 might, however, be fixed in the chamber 1. In a modification, Fig. 2, the door has two flaps 22a, 22b operated by toggle levers 26 as shown. Sliding doors might, however, be used. As a substitute for the slotted members 25, a hinged member 29, Fig. 1, might be used to lie over the material 2 to conduct the drying air and close superfluous corner space. A discharge pipe 31 with a valve 32 can be used to release saturated air. Transparent doors 33 may be fitted and a thermocontact alarm 35 to guard against overheating.
