A baking oven is divided into several superposed chambers 8 by horizontal hollow heating elements 9 forming part of a closed circuit for hot gases supplied by an oil burner 7 discharging through a combustion tube 5 into a rear oven space, said elements terminating short of the oven side walls whereby spaces are left to receive the side structure of a wheeled trolley 13 formed with transverse supports 16 at each chamber level for trays of food. A fan 6 discharges the hot gases into a vertical flue 4 communicating with each heating unit through inlets 11 controlled by dampers 19 actuated by spindles 20 extending through the oven side walls. Each element 9 is formed in its upper wall with transverse slots 12 discharging the hot gases into the baking Chamber immediately above. The gases escape through the open sides of the chambers for re-circulation to the rear space 3 and the fan 6, excess gases escaping through an upper flue 17 under control of a damper 18. The insulated door 2 closes against the front end of the heating elements 9 and one or more auxiliary doors are formed therein to provide independent access to single chambers. The slots 12 may be dispensed with and the baking chambers closed by baffles on the trolley 13.
