Abstract

<PICT:0457301/III/1> In an apparatus comprising a chamber 1 in which a granular material is maintained in suspension by a laterally directed jet of liquid from an orifice 5 just above the bottom boundary of the suspension zone, the said boundary consists of the top surface of a body 4b of granules sufficiently large to remain substantially stationary. The layer 4b may be of different material from the suspension. The apparatus may be used as a crystallizer in which case the layer 4b may be composed of large crystals. A small secondary flow of treating fluid may pass up through the layer 4b from inlet 7. The apparatus may also be used in washing or leaching processes. Specification 418,349 is referred to.
