Abstract

456,989. Internal-combustion engine exhaust turbines. ELLOR, J. E., Royal Aircraft Establishment, South Farnborough, Hampshire. March 20, 1923, No. 7936. Drawings to Specification. [Class 110 (iii)] [See also Group XXVII] The exhaust gases from an internal-combustion engine, which may be a two-stroke cycle engine, are led to a radial-flow turbine driving a pre-compressor for the air or explosive mixture supply. The exhausts from the several cylinders are delivered to separate sets of nozzles spaced around the turbine wheel. Alternatively, the exhausts of cylinders whose exhaust periods do not overlap are connected to the same set of nozzles. At the completion of the exhaust stream, the turbine blades act as a pump to exhaust the cylinder further. The gas delivered by the pump is passed through a cooler.
