Abstract
455,938. Projectile-protecting rings. COLUMBIAN ROPE CO., 309, Genesee Street, Auburn, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Bowen, K. H.) June 27, 1935, Nos. 18451 and 18452. Convention dates, June 27, 1934 and Feb. 28, 1935. [Class 9 (i)] [See also Groups XXIII and XVII] Protectors for explosive shells and Similar rings are formed by winding a length of the fibrous material spirally, the individual fibres being separate and arranged in the form of a band and a binder for uniting the fibres being applied during the winding, the fibres are wedged between juxtaposed fibres of the same or a preceding convolution. The length of fibre 10, Fig. 1, previously combed to cause the individual fibres to lie parallel, is fed over a guide 11, between spreader devices 12, and between rotating rolls 13, 13<a> yieldingly urged together. The fibre length 10 then passes beneath nozzles 15, where it is sprayed with an adhesive, for example, glue or latex cement, and is then wound onto a spool comprising a paper core 14<a> carried between discs 14 on a shaft 17, being pressed during winding by a spring-pressed roller 21 ; one of the discs is removable to allow removal /of the finished roll of fibre. The winding tension is controlled by an adjustable friction clutch in the shaft 17 comprising a plate 24, Fig. 3, secured to one section of the shaft and engaged by a plate 24<a> mounted on the other section and adjustable by springs 25 and bolts 27 ; or the tension may be controlled by manual operation of the winding spool. The body may be dried in a mould, under pressure, and. heat may be applied when a vulcanizable binder is employed. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a construction wherein the fibre band is narrower than the roll and is wound forwards and backwards along the surface of the roll. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
