Winding webs.-In the production of supply spools of composite strip material, for use in the manufacture of filter wads for cigarettes, cigarette holders, cigars, tobacco pipes, &c., layers of creped or corrugated paper and of absorbent material are withdrawn from supply rolls and are associated together in such a manner that layers of absorbent material are applied between layers of creped or corrugated paper and tearing or stretching of the absorbent material is prevented. The crepe or corrugated paper and the absorbent material are preferably such as are described in Specification 311,831, [Class 130, Tobacco]. Fig. 1 shows an apparatus for the production of spools of composite material comprising three layers of crepe or corrugated paper from supply rolls b, b<1>, b<7>, and two intervening layers of absorbent material from supply rolls a, a<1>. The layers b<4>, b<5> of crepe &c. paper from the rolls b, b<1> are led over the rolls a, a<1> and serve as carriers for the superposed layers a<4>, a<5> of absorbent material, a final layer b<6> of crepe &c. paper being laid on the layer a<4> from the roll b<7>. The composite strip passes over a roller c to a cutting device comprising disc cutters d co-operating with circumferential grooves in a roller e. The strip is thus cut into narrow strips which are wound on a number of ring-like formers f<1> on a spindle f. In order to keep the top of the resulting roll on a level with the top of the roller e, the arms g<1> carrying the spindle f are gradually lowered during winding by means of rods g<3> pivoted to blocks g<4> on a screw-threaded shaft g<5> driven from the shaft of the roller c. The winding spindle f is driven from the main shaft through belt and spur gear p<1>, p<2> and a lightly loaded clutch, and the cutter shaft d<1> through belt or chain gear p<4>. The rolls a, a<1>, b, b<1>, b<7> are driven from a shaft p<6> connected through a, pair of coned pulleys p<7> to a shaft p<5> driven from the shaft p by worm gearing, and the drive to the rolls a, a<1> or all the supply rolls may be transmitted through lightly loaded clutches. The completed spools are removed from the spindle f, a spring clip i, Fig. 4. being applied to each to retain its form until a coating of adhesive is applied to one side.
