Abstract

455,222. Clutches. CROFT, F., and CROFT, A., c/o Crofts, (Engineers), Ltd., Thornbury, Bradford, Yorkshire. April 12, 1935, No. 11299. [Class 80 (ii)] Relates to a friction cone or plate clutch of the type in which an annular wedge-surface 14b, Fig. 1, forces balls or rollers 11 into a tapering groove between members 9, 12 so that one member 9 is moved axially to bring the clutch into engagement. According to the invention, a cage such as 22 is employed to retain the balls or rollers in their engaging positions. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the presser plate 9 is urged by the balls 11 against the action of springs 10 into engagement with plates 2, 3 splined to the driving sleeve 7 and to the housing 6 on the driven shaft B. The cam sleeve 14 is axially movable by a groove 14a engaging an operating-fork and is connected by a sliding key 14b to the ring 12, which in turn is connected by a sliding key 13 to the driving shaft A. The position of the ring 12 may be adjusted by a nut 15 having serrations 15a interlocking with serrations on the ring 12. A slot 14d in the cam sleeve permits this sleeve to be held stationary while the nut 15 is rotated. In the form shown in Fig. 7, the presser plate 9 has an internal conical surface 9b and the operating sleeve 14 an externally-tapered surface 14b. The sleeve 14 is operated by a rod 19 sliding inside the shaft A and connected to an operating-collar 17 by arms 20.
