[Class 17 (ii)] A wood or like one-piece heel for a shoe, which is shaped to enclose the shoe sole at its heelend, is permanently attached to the shoe by pyroxylin cement rather than by metallic fasteners. The seat of the shoe or the seat of the heel or, preferably both, is coated with cement which is activated immediately prior to the seating of the heel, and the parts are held in engagement under pressure until the cement has set. In one form, Fig. 4, the heel seat of an outsole 1 is formed with perforations 2 with lateral extensions 3 which become filled with cement to form pegs when the surface 4 is coated with adhesive. This cement is then activated and the heel is applied to the heel seat and held under pressure until the cement has set. Instead of coating the heel seat surfaces with cement, a blank 22, Fig. 20, of appropriate shape cut from a thin sheet of adhesive prepared by coating a sheet of glass with cement composition, in which bubbles of air have been entrapped by vigorous stirring, and removing it by a sharp-edged tool after it has set, may be activated, by dipping it into a solvent, and placed between the heel seat surfaces to be united. In a further form, Fig. 27, registering holes 41 may be formed in the inner and outer soles 35, 36 at the heel seat and these may be filled with adhesive to form pegs 42 which unite the soles together. Non- registering perforations 45 may be formed in the seat of the heel and become fitted with adhesive when the activated adhesive-coated heel seat surfaces are pressed together.
