[Class 17 (ii).] A method of preparing an outer sole 10 for attachment to a lasted upper by adhesive cement consists in applying the cement to the marginal portion of the fore part of the sole and thereafter removing a marginal strip 19 from the cemented portion. In this way, the sole will uniformly adhere to the upper where required, but will not adhere in certain other places. As applied to women's shoes with Louis heels, the outer sole 10 is split at 14 on the underside for a wood heel. The sole is reduced or fleshed slightly around its fore margin to ensure uniform thickness and shanked out or bevelled well back towards the heel 13. These parts are then roughened and cemented leaving the lighter parts free. The sole is completely finished on the bottom side by lacquering in case of slippers before attachment to the upper, eliminating subsequent finishing operation.
