[Class 39 (i)] An electrode comprises a base of solid metal and one or more layers of the same metal forming the surface are made in a rough crystalline form by oxidizing and then reducing in an atmosphere of hydrogen and water-vapour. A tungsten wire may be thus treated, and may be thoriated or coated with barium or strontium compounds or with nickel, so as to constitute a thermionic cathode. Sheet metal, gauze or stranded wire may be treated similarly.
