452,347. Cutting fabrics. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London. Sept. 9, 1935, No. 25105. Convention date, Sept. 7, 1934. [Class 31 (i)] A fabric made of or containing yarns of thermoplastic material is cut by a knife element extending through the fabric and maintained above the temperature of fusion of the material, and the cut edges are held apart during cutting so as to allow them to cool before permitting them to contact with each other or any other portion of the fabric. As shown, fabric 12 from a roll 11 on an adjustable carriage 6 passes through a tensioning device 41, over a guide roll 39 to bars 45, 46 between which it is cut into ribbons by a number of stationary knives 55; the ribbons pass together over a guide roll 40 round a driven friction drum 28 to a receiving roll 31. The rolls 39, 40, bars 45, 46 and tensioning device 41 are carried by a vertically movable carriage 34. The knives 55 of triangular section to separate the cut edges are secured to a tube 48 provided with a heating element 47 and surrounded by asbestos 60 and an outer tube 57. The bar 46 preferably is hollow and cooling water circulates through it ; asbestos powder may be placed between the bars 45, 46.
