[Also in Division B4] Apparatus for cutting into predetermined lengths of textile material 2 formed from thermoplastic yarn, e.g. nylon, comprises means 1 to hold the material, guides 7, 8 for the material, a movable clamp 30, 32 to engage an end of the material which is then drawn to a predetermined length by movement of the clamp for a predetermined distance and a heated cutter 22 to cut the predetermined length and form a heat sealed end to the yarns where cut. As described, a ribbon 2 is passed under a rod 8, between separating pins 7 on a strip 6, beneath tensioning rollers mounted in end bearings 26 between an adjustable tensioning clamp 24, 25 to the movable clamp, which includes a part 30 biased to be closed against a base 32 by a spring 36. A handle 46 actuates a nose 38 in a stirrup 39 on the part 30 to open the clamp. In operation, the clamp, holding an end of the material to be cut, is slit along a track 5 until an adjustable stop 34 contacts a microswitch 35, which de-energizes an electromagnet 16, so that a frame 13, 14, 17, 18 descends and an electrically heated wire 22 carried in the frame passes through and cuts the material simultaneously sealing the ends to form a firm selvedge. The clamp is then opened to release the material, and returned to its initial position. The hot wire is mounted between a bracket 19 and a pivoted bracket 21 biased by a coil spring 23 to maintain the tension when the wire expands.
