[Classes 79 (i), 79 (ii), 79 (iv), and 79 (v)] [See also Group XXXII] Means for varying the wheel track or gauge of a tractor comprise a land or road wheel carried between inner and outer supports so that the wheel axle is supported at both ends, and means for adjusting the wheel laterally between the supports. In the construction shown a tractor is mounted on two front laterallvadjustable driving wheels 3, Fig. 1, and a single rear steering wheel 48, Fig. 4, steering being assisted by braking either front wheel separately. Alternatively, instead of a single rear steering wheel two rear wheels may be provided mounted either on stub axles or on a centrally - pivoted axle for steering. Each front wheel 3 is slidable on a splined sleeve 9, Fig. 2, which is rotatable on an axle 6 held in bearing or supports 8, 41 secured to members 39, 37 of a chassis frame member. The wheel 3 is adjustable along the sleeve 9 by means of a screw or screws 11 screwed into the wheel hub 10 and rotatable in but prevented from axial movement in members 14, 15 secured to the sleeve 9. The front wheels are driven from the engine 1 through change-speed gearing 4, and three trains of reducing gearing comprising (1) spur gears 20, 22, 27, the middle gear being an idler wheel, (2) bevel gearing 28, 36, with differential gear 33 and shafts 34, Fig. 5, and (3) spur gearing 40, 16, Fig. 1. A power pulley 29 is provided on the shaft 24 of the first gear 20 which gear may be declutched from the shaft if desired. A second power take-off is provided from the idler wheel 22, which may drive implement lifting gear through a shaft 32, and a third power take-off may be provided by a rearward extension of the shaft 26 of the spur gear 27. The chassis frame comprises closely-spaced longitudinal members 7, and outer side members 39 which are upswept at the front similarly to the members 7 and are connected together in front of the engine and behind the wheels 3 by transverse members 62, Fig. 5, also connected to the members 7. Thus each wheel 3 is enclosed in a rectangular sub-frame. The main members 7 aro braced and connected together by the gear casings 4, 31, 37. The rear steering wheel 48, Fig. 4 is mounted in a fork 50 which is rotated in a column 53 by a hand wheel 54 and reducing gearing 55. The column 53 is secured to a block 57 adjustable laterally along two bars 56 fixed to the vehicle frame. If two rear wheels are provided both may be adjustable laterally. An implement 60, 61 may be attached by means of draw-bars 58, Fig. 1.
