Abstract

451,628. Batteries. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE, 54, Rue la Boetie, Paris. June 11, 1935, No. 16833. Convention date, June 9, 1934. [Class 53] [See also Group VIII] A separator is composed of layers of materials of different porosity connected together by the partial penetration of one layer into the adjacent layer, the porosity of the external parts of the outer layers of the separator remaining in its initial condition. The layers may consist of fibrous quartz or glass wool and porous rubber and they may be connected by spreading latex mixture over a diaphragm of glass wool and allowing the latex to penetrate the glass wool to a small extent and then vulcanizing the whole to convert the latex into porous rubber. Alternatively a diaphragm of glass wool may be partly impregnated with latex on one of its faces and connected to a layer of porous rubber by vulcanization. The separator may consist of a single layer of glass wool and porous rubber or of a layer of glass wool between two layers of porous rubber or of a layer of porous rubber between two layers of glass wool. The Figure shows a separator consisting of a glass wool layer G and a porous rubber layer R having ribs 10.
