Abstract
574,616. Dry secondary batteries. VARLEY DRY ACCUMULATORS, Ltd., FULLER, L., LARK, H. D., and SZPER, J. A. Feb. 8, 1944, No. 2348. [Class 53] An electric secondary battery of the dry type comprises pasted plates 11, 12 separated by layers 13 of sheet like separating material and having outer sheets 13a of the same material, these all being compressed to form an absorbent pack with no voids and the pack being slid into a tight fitting container 20 of ebonite, for example, and serving to fill the container except for an upper space 33. The battery is sealed in the usual manner by a lid 26 and pitch layer 34 and is charged with electrolyte through a vent 29 having feet 32 resting on a porcelain or like plate 31 resting on the pack. Normally the electrolyte is accommodated wholly within the pack but when quick charging occurs, as in traction uses, the space 33 accommodates electrolyte released too rapidly to be absorbed immediately in the pack. The plates 11, 12 preferably have lead or insulating frames which grip the sheets of separating material and the separating material is tamped round the edges of the plates to surround them completely. The space 33 may be filled with loosely packed glass wool or sand, if desired, the filling material being coarse so as to permit electrolyte to drain back into the pack readily. The coarse material may have a porous cover and the space 33 may be constituted by employing a domed lid in place of the flat lid 26. The sheets of separating material are preferably formed of glass wool coated with kieselguhr, with rubber latex as an adhesive as described in Specification 537,377, [Group V].
