Abstract

450,458. Differential gearing. WITHERLY, W. C., 3241, School Road, Vancouver, Canada. Jan. 15, 1935, No. 1412. Convention date, Feb. 20, 1934. [Class 80 (ii)] Differential gearing comprises two one-way clutches A, B, Fig. 2, driving axles 1, 2, the clutches being reversed simultaneously by a manual control 32. There is a driving drum 13 common to the clutches A, B, one of which is shown in Fig. 3. There are grip rollers 40 adapted to drive a recessed hub 36 in one direction, and rollers 41 adapted to drive an oppositely-recessed hub 35 in the opposite direction, the hubs 35, 36 being integral with a bush 3 keyed to the axle 1 and with a bush 4 keyed to the axle 2. Between each pair of oppositelygripping rollers 40, 41 extends a dog 22 carried by a flange 21 so that as the flange 21 is displaced angularly relatively to the hubs 35, 36, the rollers 40 may be moved all together against their springs 39 to inoperative position leaving the rollers 41 free to drive in a certain direction, while displacing the flange the other way disables the rollers 41 and leaves the rollers 40 free to drive in the other direction. As shown in Fig. 2, the two flanges 21 for reversing the clutches A and B are adapted to be displaced angularly in unison by the manual control 32 acting through coupled sliding control sleeves 27 and two sets of crossed slots 12, 20.
