Abstract

450,441. Cylindrical journal bearings. LUND, Ltd., J., and SCAIFE, J. D., Eastburn Foundry, Eastburn, near Keighley, Yorkshire. Oct. 13, 1934, No. 29332. [Class 12 (i)] The invention relates to the lubrication of bearings for rotary shafts which are subject in use to upward forces tending to raise the shaft from its bearing as, e.g. a shaft carrying a cutting or grinding tool. As shown, the shaft 4 runs in a lower half-bush 3, Fig. 1, secured by screws 4, 4b, 4<c> to the housing 2, and an upper half-bush 3 secured by screws 6, 6 carried in a cap member 2. The bush 3 is provided with circumferentially tapering recesses s, s<1>, s<2>, Fig. 4, the central recess s having an arcuate extent of approximately 60‹ and the outer recesses s<1>, s<2> having an arcuate extent of approximately 130‹. The oil films formed in the recesses exert pressure on the shaft at two points, viz. the terminal points of the recesses, which are so disposed that the forces tending to raise the shaft from its bearing are resisted. The bush 3a is cut awav at 5 to form a lubricant reservoir to which lubricant is supplied as, e.g. by a circulating pump, and which communicates through an opening f with the recesses s, s<1>, s<2>. The greatest depth of each recess is determined by its circumferential extent so that each recess is tapered at the same rate.
