Abstract

446,043. Printing-machines. WALE, B., 734, Mather Street, Chicago, U.S.A. May 17, 1935, No. 14519. Convention date, May 22, 1934. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii)] A rotary printing-machine is constructed with means for feeding sheets to and through the machine comprising impaling pins 22 for engaging front edges of sheets which are placed by hand on supports 3 and registered against a ledge 33, and frictional means for carrying the sheets through the printing-couple 1, 2. The printing-cylinder 1 is fitted with a relief printing-surface 1<a>. The impression roller is fitted with a blanket 2a having a gap 7 between the ends of the blanket corresponding to the gap 6 for receiving the securing screws for the surface 1<b>. In the gap 7 are secured a central pin 21 and other pins 22 for starting the feed of the sheets. The pin 21 acts through a gap in the sheet support 3 and raises a pivoted flap 35 which lifts the front edge of the sheet over the ledge 33, and the pins 22 pass through slots 41 in sheet guides 4 arranged above the sheet and carry the sheet into engagement with the rollers 1, 2 which feed the sheet during the printing-operation with or without the aid of type-high friction rings arranged on the printing and impression cylinders. These rings may receive water or mercury to prevent ink from adhering to them, or the sheets may be trimmed after passing strippers 5 and delivering rollers 39, 39<a>. The pins 22 project through rubber pads 36 which assist in forwarding the sheet. The machine may be used for printing a continuous web in which case the pin 21 is not in action, and such a web or a long sheet may receive intermittent motions equal to the length of a segmental printing-surface 1a, and between the impressions the sheet or web is held by a stationary clamping device 42, 43 operated to clamp the web while a segmental member 46 equal to the non-printing segmental portion of the cylinder 2 passes the pivoted member 43 of the clamp. The sheet support 3 may be duplicated for wide sheets, and it is preferably fitted with an adjustable upper portion 31. An adjustable throat consisting of a roller 38 and a screw 37 arranged at each side of the support 3 may be set to allow two sheets to pass through at a time, the second and lower sheet being introduced while the sheet being printed is advancing. The lower sheet is carried forward by the upper one and is arrested by the registering device until the pins 21, 22 come into action. After printing, the web or long sheets may be treated by longitudinal trimming or transverse cutting apparatus.
