Abstract

441,526. Eddy - current brakes. SIEMENS - SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.- GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. May 31, 1935, Nos. 15914, 15915, and 15916. Convention dates, May 31, 1934, Jan. 24, 1935, and Feb. 4, 1935. [Class 103 (i)] [See also Groups XXXVI and XXXV] A permanent magnet system, especially a brake magnet system for electricity meters, comprises a U-shaped permanent magnet soldered or welded to a narrow side edge of the end of one limb of an iron loop which extends along or parallel to the magnetically neutral zone of the magnet, the other limb forming a magnetic return path or carrying a counter magnet located opposite the poles of the U-shaped magnet. As shown in Fig. 1, the magnet system comprises two permanent magnets 2, 3 on opposite sides of the braking disc 5. A U-shape soft-iron member 1 is soldered or welded to the magnets 2; 3 along their neutral magnetic zones 4. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, a single permanent magnet 8 has soldered or welded to its neutral zone a soft-iron member 6, the end portion 9 of which is situated opposte the poles of the magnet 8 so as to complete its magnetic circuit. In a further modification, shown in elevation in Fig. 3 and in plan in Fig. 4, two permanent magnets 1 and connected by a pair of U-shaped members 4, 5, the ends 8 of which are bent at right-angles and soldered or welded by their narrow edges 9 to ribs 2 provided along the neutral magnetic zones of the magnets 1. The members 4, 5 are spot welded to one another at 7 and are then bent apart as shown. Lugs 6 on the members 4, 5 are welded to a supporting plate 10 by which the magnet system may be mounted. An extension 12 of the member 4 is bent into U-shape and is provided with screw-threaded holes to receive an adjusting screw 13 which carries an iron cone 11 for adjusting the braking force. The profile of this is complementary to the outer end of a pole of the magnet 1. A similar adjusting iron may be provided for the opposite pole of the magnet or for one or both poles of the second magnet. The poles of the permanent magnet may be arranged at different radial distances from the axis of the brake disc so that one pole will have a stronger braking effect than the other. The adjusting devices for these poles will have correspondingly different effects.
