Abstract

439,465. Folding chairs. HATHERLEY WORKS, Ltd., and ASHWELL, G. R., Melbourne Street, Gloucester. June 11, 1935, No. 16757. [Class 52 (ii)] In folding chairs of the type in which a pin and notch connection is provided between one or more legs and arm rests to vary the inclination of the chair, the arm rest comprises two elements placed side by side and rigidly connected, with a recessed vertical face of one element lying against the vertical face of the other element to provide an opening in the lower face of the arm rest for the passage of an extension of the leg, a transverse pin on the extension being adapted to engage a notched groove in the recess. The front legs 12 of the chair are pivoted at 13 to rear legs 14 to which are pivoted at 15 the sides 10 of the back rest, which carry pivotally the arm rests 21. Each arm rest comprises two members 21, 22 secured together, the member 22 having a recess 23 with a notched groove 24. Before securing the parts 21, 22 together a metal extension 27 of the front leg 12 is inserted in the recess 23 and has a pin 26 slidable in the groove 24 and engageable with the notches 25. When the parts 21, 22 are secured together by screws the front legs and arm rests cannot be separated. A canvas seat 16 with a pocket 17 to enclose a relatively rigid element is connected between transverse bars 11, 18. A transverse bar 19 extends between the front legs 12 and forms a seating for the rear legs 14. To vary the inclination of the back rest the sitter raises the front ends of the arm rests to disengage the pins 26 and exerts a pressure on the back rest until it assumes the desired position whereupon the arm rests are lowered to cause the pin 26 to enter the nearest notch 25.
