Abstract
437,406. Yielding couplings. FAIREY, C. R., Cranford Lane, Hayes, Middlesex. Dec. 14, 1934, No 35954. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXXIII] An air-screw has its action with the engine shaft at a position remote from the engine and the drive is arranged to provide a torsional flexibility of from 2 to 15‹. The screw propeller hub 4 is provided with an extended sleeve adapted to be coupled by splines at 10 to the hollow engine shaft 1 at a position remote from the engine 3, the near end being supported on the ball-bearing 9. In order to obtain this the driving shaft 1 or the sleeve 5 or both may be formed with weakening grooves or slots. In the modification the propeller hub 4 is supported on two sets of ball-bearings 9, 16 and has a flange 15 adjacent ball-bearing 16 which is secured by pin 20 to a groove or slotted sleeve 17 within the hollow driving shaft. This sleeve is secured in turn by a pin 21 to the driving shaft adjacent the ball bearing 9. It is stated that the distance between the engine bearing and the point of action of the torsion driving member with the hub is not less than the internal diameter of said torsion member and not more than six times.
