Abstract

636,304. Universal joints. SINGER MOTORS, Ltd., SHORTER, L. J., HARDY, SPICER & CO., Ltd., and DANIELL, J. A. March 17, 1948, No 7953. [Class 80 (ii)] The splined slip-joint of the front universal joint 13 of a motor-vehicle propeller shaft is arranged on the driving, or gear-box side so as to be lubricated from the gear-box, and comprises an internally splined driving sleeve 17 which slides axially on the splined gear-box tail shaft 18 and in a supporting needle-bearing 24 housed in an extension 23 of the main gearcasing 21. The sleeve 17 has disc or cylindrical outer closure cap 26, either provided with a breather-hole 27 or a return groove and radial drilling are provided to communicate the endspace with the inner side of the oil-seal 25. The needle-rollers may bear on a hardened sleeve carried by the sleeve 17. The tail shaft 18 is long in comparison with its diameter so as to be torsionally flexible.
