[Class 60] The knife c of a cigarette or like machine is supported againsi flexure whilst in con tact with the grinding or setting tool f by a rest or support i arranged on the opposite side of the knife In the form shown ir Figure 1 the support consists of a wheel, rotated by contact with the knife or independently, and preferably having a rubber or other resilient contact surface. Supports of other forms giving point contact with the knife may be employed, for example, a cylinder or cone, or a brush member with very stiff bristles. Figure 2 shows a support k shaped so as to bear upon the knife for a part or the whole of its length, and resiliently mounted. The support may be automatically adjusted to maintain its position in relation to the edge of the knife in cases where the knife is not continuously adjusted to compensate for the wear of the cutting edge. In order to avoid simultaneous contact of the knife with the support and the grinding tool, the support may contact with the knife before the latter reaches the grinding wheel, and move a short distance with it.
