Abstract
Phenol-mercury compounds are obtained by allowing a solution of a mercury salt to flow into a heated alkaline solution of a halogen-, nitro-, or halogennitro-phenol. According to the example, a sulphuric acid solution of mercuric sulphate is slowly run with constant stirring into a hot sodium carbonate solution of o-nitrophenol, the amount of sodium carbonate present being such that the reaction mixture becomes acid only after decomposition is complete; on cooling and settling, mercury-o-nitrophenol is obtained.
