[Classes 78 (ii) and 78 (iv)] [See also Group XXXII] In the transport of rolling loads, such as road vehicles, upon railway wagons of the kind provided with longitudinal guiding rails, &c., upon which the loads are enabled to rest by means of auxiliary wheels or rollers the track of the auxiliary wheels is greater than the track of the road wheels. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement in which the load comprises a road vehicle adapted to be loaded on a carrying wagon B provided with rails which guide the load and serve also to prevent transverse movement, longitudinal movement during transport being prevented by known wedging means. The road vehicle is adapted to pass on to a loading wagon having sides P which' serve as a gangway and thence to the carrying wagon, being brought in to axial alignment for transference by the curved guides 8 and passing over bridging rails 7 to the rails 5. The wheels of the vehicles are provided with fixed or detachable flanged rollers A which roll on the rails 5, 7 raising the vehicle wheels clear of the wagon platform. In some instances the carrying wagon B and the loading wagon, when the latter is also to be used as a carrying wagon, are provided with disappearing rails comprising hinged angle plates 10, Fig. 4, which when upright do not quite reach the rollers A but are provided at the required points with bands 11 which engage the rollers A and raise the vehicle wheels. Various means are provided on the loading platform or wagon for positioning the load prior to its transference to the carrying wagon. As shown in Fig. 6 freely rotatable rollers 21 permit the wheels of the vehicle to be moved transversely with ease and adjustable guides G hinged at 20 further guide the vehicle to the bridge P<1>. The carrying wagon B in this instance is provided, instead of rails, with running boards 30 adapted to contact with the flanges of bosses or rollers fixed to the wheels. In place of the rollers 21, especially where a stationary platform is used, a platform 23, Fig. 12, mounted to move transversely, is employed, the guides G being fixed. If desired the movable platform may be a disappearing one.
